For this project, I created a book cover for Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, with the use of Gestalt principles. The design depicts three fetuses inside pods that are being transferred on a conveyer belt, to portray the feeling of control and loss of identity. I also tried to incorporate elements from brutalism, to showcase mass-production and the feeling of institutional coldness. The dark blue with the bright white color enhance sterile and clean feel of the book, as well as the controlled society that is portrayed in the book. The final design was created in Adobe Illustrator.

Color Palette: The combination of these two colors portrays the heavily controlled society while at the same time evokes the feeling of loss of identity that are the themes I chose to work with.

Typography: The two font styles combined gives the design a clean, authoritarian and modern expression.

Gestalt Principles: : I have used the principles proximity, continuation, figure-ground and closure to bring the design together and portray the themes of controll and loss of identity.

What I have learned

This project taught me how to convey a book's themes with symbolism and composition. I got to experiment with the different Gestalt principles, and really understand how they could be used to showcase a theme in a striking way. I also understood the importance of negative space, as well as choosing the right color palette, and how much they can influence the mood of the design.
